Dagwood’s Vac Services is a locally family owned business. We have 2 tandem large capacity, septic, and wastewater vacuum trucks to provide prompt, professional service. Myself, Daryl, and our son-in-law Brayden are both mechanics. We keep our trucks in top condition to be ready for the job at hand.

We are very knowledgeable about the septic systems and handle them with great care. We always do a thorough job of cleaning both sides of the septic tank. If a garden hose is left out at the job site, we will use it to wash down the water side of the tank and pump.

Septic Tank Cleaning

We clean out both sides of the septic tank. Our trucks have high volume vacuum pumps so we can do a thorough job cleaning both sides. It's recommended to have a garden hose available so we can wash down your pump and water side of the tank as well. We are very knowledgeable about septic systems and strive to do the best job possible. We always respect your property, so you can rest easy knowing we will take great care on the job.

Tank cleaning is usually done from April to October. Unless there are problems with your septic system it is not advised to pump it out in the winter due to the possibility of it freezing. Liquid waste removal must be completed while temperatures are within an acceptable range to prevent freeze up.

The recommended tank pumping interval on a 750-gallon tank is as follows:

  • 5-6 Occupants: Once a year
  • 3-4 Occupants: Once every 2 years
  • 1-2 Occupants: Once every 3 years

Pumping the tank more often than is required is much better than leaving it to the last minute. Properly maintained systems last longer and septic systems are very expensive to fix or replace.

Septic Tank and Field Maintenance Tips

Proper septic tank and septic field maintenance can keep your system in top condition and prevent costly issues. Here are some tips in order to maximize your septic system's life.

  • Be sure you have an alarm system in your tank to warn you before you have a sewer backup
  • Make efforts to minimize the amount of water that goes into the onsite sewage system
  • Systems are designed to handle domestic wastewater. Things that do not break down easily are:        
    • Facial tissue, large amounts of vegetable scrapings, coffee grounds, chemicals, paint, oils, sanitary napkins, applicators, condoms, medicines, pesticides, poisons, strong disinfectants, etc. These can damage a system and even stop a pump, as well as increase the need for cleaning.
  • Do not pour grease or cooking oil down the drain (including a toilet). Grease and oil are hard to break down and will eventually move into the soil plugging it off.
  • Restrict the use of in-sink garbage disposals
  • Disposal fields are installed near the surface, so it is important to keep automobile and heavy equipment off the system. The piping and septic tanks can be damaged by heavy traffic, and the traffic will compact the ground, reducing its ability to absorb sewage water. In winter, traffic (even snowmobiles and foot paths) will drive the frost into the system causing it to freeze.
  • Have the tank pumped out on a regular basis. Most tanks need to be pumped every 2 years, but this depends on the size of the tank and the amount of waste it receives. The more occupants using the tank, the more often it will need to be pumped out

How do septic systems work?

Below is a cross section diagram and simple explanation of a septic tank and how it works.

Septic tanks and septic fields are the most common domestic wastewater treatment systems used in rural areas.

Septic tanks remove settable and floatable solids from wastewater. Septic fields then get rid of the cleaned wastewater by letting it adsorb into the soil through perforated pipes. Removing solids from the wastewater protects the septic field from clogging and failure. Septic tanks also promote biological digestion of a portion of the solids and store the remaining undigested portion.

How Do Septic Systems Work?

One side of the septic tank removes solids by holding wastewater in the tank. This allows heavier solids to settle as sludge and lighter particles (ie. grease) to form a scum layer in the top. To accomplish this, wastewater should be held in the tank for at least 24 hours. Up to 50% of the solids retained in the tank decompose. The remainder accumulates in the tank.

You can see in the diagram, wastewater volume is the “available space” between the floating scum and settled sludge. As the septic tank is used the scum and sludge continue to accumulate, making the wastewater volume smaller and smaller. This also reduces the amount of time the wastewater has to settle out as scum or sludge, leaving more suspended solids to flow out to the septic field.

If too many solids are left to go into the septic field it will shorten its life and cause failure by clogging the soil around the field pipes. To prevent this, the septic tank must be pumped on a proper schedule. If you don’t have a septic field and just have a pump out above ground, suspended solids are not as much of a concern but can still do damage to the pump. To go any more than 3 years between pump outs is not recommended. The scum layer hardens when it is exposed to the atmosphere and gets to a point where it can never be broken up and removed. Also, the H2S gas content will get so high that it will corrode the tank, shortening its life.

The schedule to pump out a septic tank is totally dependent on the volume of wastewater used per day and the size of the tank. The majority of tanks are 750 gallons so it mostly depends on the number of people in the house. Rule of thumb: 5-6 occupants need the tank pumped once a year, 3-4 occupants every 2 years, and 1-2 occupants once every 3 years. To be careful, many people have it pumped out every year. Those who do have the least amount of problems with their septic system.
